| The Vancouver Canucks Booster Club is
run exclusively by volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities to
do some work for the club. None of the volunteer work attracts quite
as much interest as the game night handouts.
If you've been to a Canucks game in the
last ten years and received a free giveaway, it was probably a member
of the booster club that handed it to you. As a booster club member
you have the opportunity to help with game night handouts. It may
sound like work (well, okay, it is a
lot of work), but it has one very huge benefit. You get to attend
Canuck games for free.
Here's the deal. You
join the booster club and purchase an official booster club sweatshirt
(they currently sell for $25). Then, whenever there's a handout, you
might get called to work the game (we usually need lots of people, so
there's a pretty good chance you'll be contacted). You do the handout,
then you get to sit down and watch the rest of the game. For the price
of one ticket to one game, you can do handouts at twenty games a season
(of course we cannot guarantee the number of handouts you will do).
Okay, here are the two
catches. Number one, you will probably miss part of the game. If the
handout is before the game, you may miss the start of the first period.
If it's a post-game handout, you'll be asked to miss half of the third
period. We have discovered that whenever we do a post-game handout,
the game goes right down to the wire. Catch number two is that
there is no guarantee that you'll actually get a seat. If there are
seats available, we'll be provided with tickets. On those occasions
when the game is a sell-out, we sit and watch the game on the monitors
(hey, it isn't so bad -- it's like having a private booster club
cheering section).
When you consider how much it costs to attend a
Canuck game these days, even seeing two periods of action is worth
an hours work. Okay, maybe you make more than I do. |
