At each Annual General Meeting, four
organizations are selected to receive a donation. The
first two are selected based on the cities with the most
members. Then, we draw one in-town and one out-of-town
(within BC) member name at random. The areas where these
two members live also receive a donation. This ensures
not only that we spread the money around the province,
but that it will go to areas that have members in the
club.
Food
Bank
In 2001-02,
the booster club took up the cause of raising donations
to the Vancouver Food Bank. Donations of canned food and
cash are accepted at our events and then passed along to
the food bank.
During the
2002-03 season, the folks at CFOX radio gave the booster
club $100 because we promoted their station at the Canuck
game in Calgary. The club matched that donation and
prepared to send a $200 cheque to the food bank. When
CFOX heard this, they doubled the donation again,
resulting in $400 being sent to the food bank.
NHLBCC
Legacy Fund
The 1996 NHLBC Convention
was held in Vancouver. The total budget for the event was
almost $200,000. At the end of the convention, the
Vancouver Canucks Booster Club was pleased (though
somewhat embarrassed) to be left with a $20,000
profit. This money has become a legacy fund. Half of the
profits have been set aside to ensure our club's
participation in future conventions (essentially giving
the money back to those who gave it to us). Of the
remaining money, $5,000 was donated to eight charities
soon after the convention:
Another $5,000 was set
aside to support amateur hockey in British Columbia. So
far about $2,700 has been donated to different hockey
organizations. In addition, we have sponsored a team in
the Vancouver (formerly Grandview) Minor Hockey
Association since the 1999-2000 season.
Late in the 2002-03 season, several
members of the booster club attended a game played by our
sponsored group of youngsters. After the game, players
from both teams were presented with Canuck souvenirs. The
players, coaches and parents were extremely pleased with
their gifts. Another generation of Canuck fans is
created.
